From Anita Hughes, author of Monarch Beach, comes Market Street, a delicious story of a department store heiress, her messy marriage, and her passion for food.
Cassie Blake seems to lead a charmed life as the heiress to Fenton's, San Francisco's most exclusive department store. But when she discovers her husband Aidan, a handsome UC Berkeley professor, has had an affair with a student, she flees to the comfort of her best friend Alexis' Presidio Heights mansion, where she wonders if she should give their marriage one more chance.
Whether or not she can forgive Aidan is not the only choice Cassie has to make. Cassie's mother is eager to have her oversee the opening of Fenton's new Food Emporium, which Fenton's hopes will become San Francisco's hottest gourmet shopping destination. Cassie's true passion has always been food, not fashion, and Cassie suspects her mother might be trying to lure her into the Fenton's fold by entrusting her with such an exciting opportunity. And then there is James, the architect designing the Emporium, who is quietly falling in love with her...

I love the growth of the characters throughout the book. Cassie finds her niche in life and Alexis finds a purpose. Market Street (Audible Audio Edition) Anita Hughes Julie McKay Audible Studios Books Reviews
MARKET STREET has all the ingredients of page-turning escapism likeable characters--except for the dirtbag husband, a glimpse of high society life in San Francisco, and steamy sex. Add in mouth-watering descriptions of gourmet food and more designer fashion than a girl can dream of...and why would you put this book down to return to real life?
The themes of the novel drew me in straight away self-discovery in the midst of betrayal and the importance of female friendships. The writing is warm and cozy, and the female characters are wonderful. My favorite part of the novel was the friendship between the heroine and her BFF. I loved that Alexis opened her home--and her wardrobe--to Cassie without once judging her or dishing out harsh marriage advice. Everyone needs a friend like Alexis.
If you're looking for the perfect weekend read, this is it.
Elite San Francisco department store heiress, Cassie Blake, is living a completely different life compared to her privileged upbringing. She is married to a Berkeley professor and spends her days volunteering in a program teaching children about organic gardening. Her life comes crashing down around her when she discovers her husband of 10 years slept with one of his students. She retreats to her best friend's home in a very exclusive section of San Francisco where she is being pursued by her husband who claims "it was only one time" and her mother who has always wanted to have her work in the family business and has now found the perfect avenue by adding a food emporium to the store patterned after the Food Halls at Harrod's in London. My favorite part of this book was the friendship between her and her friend, Alexis. It proves why women always need to have girlfriends to confide in.
All that being said, this is the second book from Anita Hughes and she seems to have a running theme - extremely wealthy women have a husband who cheats on them and their extremely domineering mother steps in to rescue their lives. Lots of designer name dropping of clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc., the average person could never afford thrown in for good measure. Being a native of San Francisco I recognized all of the places and many of the people mentioned in the book. I could picture everything exactly as it is and that was fun. I do wish the author used a little more gentle language for people having sex because one can only take so much of a particular phrase.
Cassie Fenton Blake has lived in San Francisco all of her life, and has memories of spending days hanging out in the Fenton Department owned by her mother, Diana. Her mother has always wanted her to work in the store, but Cassie's passion is organic vegetable gardening, and across the Bay, helps Chez Panisse owner Alice Waters in her garden. Cassie believes that her marriage to Aidan Blake, an ethics professor at Berkeley, is everything she needs and that her life is just about perfect.
Best friend Alexis has a husband who travels around the world for months at a time, but enjoys lavishing pricey goodies on his wife. But she finds herself bored and listlessly trying to seek out adventures.
Then an unexpected encounter at the store one day turns Cassie's life upside down, and starts a landslide of doubts and fears about her husband.
What does Cassie do after confronting her husband? How will a special project initiated by her mother turn into an exciting venture that will change how she views her life? And what new endeavor will Alexis fall into, somewhat serendipitously, and how will it completely recharge her waning energy?
Market Street was a delightful, if slightly predictable story with just enough romance and intriguing adventures to keep me reading. Of course, I was pleased when Cassie dumped Aidan and started making choices that would benefit her and her career. 3.5 stars.
